Sony stated Call of Duty’s success is so great that no other shooter, even Battlefield, can compete

Sony stated Call of Duty’s success is so great: PC Gamer reports that in response to the UK government’s probe of the merger, Sony said that no other shooter, not even Battlefield, could compete with the success of Call of Duty.

According to the message, “Call of Duty” cannot be duplicated. “Call of Duty has become too popular for any competitor, no matter how well-funded, to catch up to it.

In addition to being the best-selling game overall and in the first-person shooter subgenre for the better part of a decade, it has also spent the majority of that time at the top of the charts.

The company went on to say that “other publishers do not have the resources or skills to match its performance.” “To offer a specific illustration, Electronic Arts, one of the major third-party developers after Activision, has spent a lot of time and effort on the Battlefield series in an attempt to create a competitor to Call of Duty.

“Despite the similarities between Call of Duty and Battlefield – and despite EA’s track record in developing other successful AAA franchises (such as FIFA, Mass Effect, Need for Speed, and Star Wars: Battlefront) – the Battlefield franchise cannot keep up. As of August 2021, more than 400 million Call of Duty games has been sold, while Battlefield has sold just 88.7 million copies.”

The most recent entry from EA, Battlefield 2042, has had a rough first year on the market. Even EA has admitted that the game has fallen short of expectations. As a result of the “walking simulator” criticism, developer DICE had to rework its maps and postpone many updates and repairs.

The current Call of Duty, however, had the best debut weekend of any installment in the series, selling over a million copies in its first three days and making a billion dollars in its first 10 days of availability.

Despite Microsoft’s assurances that future installments in the series will be available on both the Xbox and PlayStation platforms, Sony is now claiming that the company may make the series an Xbox exclusive if it so chooses.

The Competition and Markets Authority of the United Kingdom is now reviewing the Activision acquisition for potential anti-competitive effects.

However, Electronic Arts view the partnership with Microsoft as a significant potential.”Being platform-agnostic and completely cross-platform with Battlefield I think is a tremendous opportunity,” CEO of EA Andrew Wilson remarked at the time.
