Adaptive Transparency, one of the new features unveiled with AirPods Pro 2, enhances Transparency Mode by reducing unwanted noise while preserving the user’s ability to hear vital ambient noises. Since the introduction of iOS 16.1 beta 3, however, users of older AirPods Pro models are also able to access this feature through iOS’s settings menu.
AirPods Pro First-generation Adaptive Transparency
Transparency Mode is a function of the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max that utilises the in-built microphones to allow the user to hear ambient noise without removing the earbuds.
Apple claims that the new H2 chip (not found in previous AirPods) is used by Adaptive Transparency in AirPods Pro 2 to “minimise the intensity of harsh sounds like sirens or power tools.” However, with the release of iOS 16.1 beta 3 this week, those who have upgraded their iPhones are now able to use Adaptive Transparency for the original AirPods Pro.
In addition to the latest iOS beta, users on Reddit have discovered that the first-generation AirPods Pro now have access to Adaptive Transparency thanks to updated beta software (version 5A304a). It’s still unknown if this is a functioning feature or a glitch.
It’s possible that Adaptive Transparency is showing up in the Settings app for users of the original AirPods Pro because Apple accidentally made it available. Until more people try out the new option and compare how it performs to the old one, we won’t know for sure if it’s any good.
