The high-performance wagon segment in the U.S. gets a boost as Mercedes-AMG confirms the E53 Wagon is coming stateside. This move follows the earlier launch of the BMW M5 Touring and marks another option for enthusiasts seeking utility with serious speed.
Mercedes has revealed limited details so far, but the U.S.-spec E53 will mirror its European counterpart, riding on standard 20-inch wheels with optional 21-inch versions. Buyers can further customize their ride with AMG Night, AMG Night Plus, and AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber packages.
Inside, the automaker has yet to release complete specifications but confirmed standard MB-Tex and Microfiber upholstery and a 17-speaker Burmester 4D surround sound system. The E53 is also expected to share technology with the E450 All-Terrain, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.4-inch infotainment screen.
Optional upgrades will include AMG Performance seats, Nappa leather, and the MBUX Superscreen, which adds a 12.3-inch passenger display for a more immersive experience.
Power and Poise
Under the hood, the E53 Wagon features a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, a 28.6 kWh battery, and an electric motor integrated into a nine-speed automatic transmission. This setup produces a combined 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 553 lb-ft (749 Nm) of torque.
These figures propel the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in four seconds, with a top speed limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). The E53 also comes standard with rear-axle steering and AMG Ride Control suspension featuring adaptive damping for enhanced agility and comfort.
Want More? There’s a Package for That
For those seeking an even more aggressive performance profile, Mercedes offers the AMG Dynamic Plus package. It unlocks a Race Start mode that boosts output to 604 hp (450 kW / 612 PS), trimming the 0-60 mph time to just 3.8 seconds.
Additional features include active engine mounts, a limited-slip rear differential, and an increased top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h). The package also adds red brake calipers, a composite braking system, and a leather and microfiber AMG Performance steering wheel.
Special Edition, Special Treatment
For buyers wanting exclusivity, the Edition 1 variant delivers. It comes finished in Manufaktur Alpine Grey with AMG graphics, 21-inch forged wheels, and a bespoke interior packed with distinctive design cues and a wealth of standard equipment.
While Mercedes has not yet announced a U.S. release date or pricing for the E53 Wagon, it’s expected to land a few thousand dollars above the E53 Sedan’s $88,000 base price (plus $1,150 destination fee). Even with that premium, it will undercut both the Audi RS6 Avant ($126,600) and BMW M5 Touring ($121,500), offering a compelling performance wagon at a more accessible price point.
