Samsung’s extensive semiconductor operations in the United States are centered in Texas, where it runs major facilities. The company operates two significant campuses in Austin and Taylor under Samsung Austin Semiconductor. These centers not only serve as production hubs but also bring considerable economic benefits to the surrounding areas.
In a recent release, Samsung published its 2024 Economic Impact Report—an independent evaluation measuring the economic value created by its two manufacturing facilities, as well as the ongoing development of its new fabrication plant in Taylor.
Samsung ranks among the largest foreign investors in U.S. history
Samsung Semiconductor began investing in Central Texas in 1996. It has since poured over $18 billion into developing and operating the two fabs at its Austin site. Construction of the Taylor campus kicked off in 2022 and is currently in progress.
Although the global semiconductor market faced headwinds in 2024, Samsung Austin Semiconductor still managed to infuse $19.8 billion into the Central Texas economy. Combined, the two facilities supported 38,498 jobs and paid $2.6 billion in employee wages. This total also takes into account the economic input from non-local visitors, vendor trucks, and indirect roles in associated sectors that benefit the community.
Beyond injecting close to $20 billion into the region, the two Texas fabs also helped generate $220.5 million in tax revenue across the local taxing authorities. The total economic activity also covers $2.9 billion paid to regional vendors and $236.3 million in spending on local goods, materials, and services.
Samsung is further reinforcing its commitment to Texas with planned investments exceeding $37 billion. This includes the new Taylor chip facility, where $17 billion will be invested. The project is expected to create around 12,000 construction jobs and more than 3,500 direct manufacturing roles.
