President Donald Trump’s trade barriers are reverberating through the games market. Console makers and accessory brands—Nintendo and Sony among them—have already raised prices, delayed pre‑orders or tweaked subscription fees to offset costs. The newest casualty: Shenzhen‑based Anbernic.
Anbernic Reacts to Global Tariff Showdown
Anbernic, a company established in 2017, has carved a niche by developing Android-powered devices. Known for its nostalgic handheld consoles, the company has released around 4-5 models per year, keeping classic gaming alive. However, the escalating trade tensions have led to a significant change in their U.S. operations.
On Monday, 21 April, Anbernic posted a statement on its website detailing its decision to halt shipping from China to the U.S. in response to the impact of Trump’s tariffs. The company’s products are typically shipped from China to the U.S. using logistics partner 4PX, with delivery times ranging from 7-20 days. But with tariffs on Chinese goods now soaring to 145%, the company can no longer continue its U.S. shipments.
Anbernic’s statement read:
“Due to changes in U.S. tariff policies, we will be suspending all orders shipping from China to the United States starting today. We strongly recommend prioritizing products shipped from our U.S. warehouse, which are currently not affected by import duties and can be purchased with confidence.”
The company emphasized that it would continue monitoring the situation and, should conditions improve, would promptly inform customers and update the policy on its website. The statement concluded with an apology.
It’s Not Just Anbernic That’s Reacting to Tariffs
Anbernic is just the latest company to issue a response to Trump’s chaotic implementation of tariffs. Nintendo has also been impacted, with its United States Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order window pushed back to Thursday, 24 April. In addition to the delays, several accessories for the Switch 2 have seen price increases:
- Switch 2 Camera is now listed at $54.99, up from $50
- Pro Controller has received a $5 price hike from $80 to $85
- An extra pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers is now priced at $95, up from $90
Ripple Effect: Nintendo’s Adjustments
Broader suggested retail pricing for Nintendo Switch 2 products as of 22 April 2025 now stands as follows:
- Switch 2 console — $449.99
- Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle — $499.99
- Mario Kart World — $79.99
- Donkey Kong Bananza — $69.99
